After attending the Liceo Scientifico Italiano di Istanbul, Sedat Bornovalı earned degrees in Tourism Administration from Boğaziçi University and in Art History and Geography from Istanbul University.

He also holds a Master’s degree and a PhD in Architectural History from Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ).

Currently, he is an Associate Professor at Istanbul Nişantaşı University, where he teaches Architectural History, bringing his extensive research and field experience into the classroom.

Having begun his career as a professional tour guide in 1990, he continues to practice today, albeit less intensively. Throughout his career, he has had the honor of introducing Türkiye’s heritage to a wide range of international figures, from heads of state to religious leaders. Among these encounters, he remembers the time spent with the great Umberto Eco with particular esteem and nostalgia.

In parallel, he directed the restoration of the historic Garibaldi Building, the headquarters of the Società Operaia Italiana di Mutuo Soccorso in Istanbul. The project gained significant media attention, notably for the discovery of a late-Roman and early-Byzantine necropolis unearthed during the excavation.

Formerly a board member in various NGOs and professional organizations, Dr. Bornovalı focuses much of his research on the preservation of Istanbul’s cultural heritage and its historical ties with Italy.

He takes great pride in holding the titles of Knight and Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
